Description
This was my entry into the Federal duck stamp contest a few years ago. They told me it made the top 20. The talent in theses competitions is absolutely amazing, so I was pleased.
The judges really want to see intricate detail, everything has to be absolutely perfect from feathers to anatomy right down to their habitat. I had the idea that the rich red plumage of a adult cinnamon teal drake reflected in a vibrant green landscape would really make a showing.
While doing research for this painting. I watched this drake dive, surface, splash around and then pump up his chest for the female. The red hues became even brighter as he emerged from the water. These tiny droplets on his chest and beak, glistened like jewels as they caught the light, adding a dynamic touch of life to the scene, and I think really impressing that hen. As the duck glided through the water the ripples, splashing and subtle movements combined to make a very interesting almost abstract surface.
